The End is Nigh
So, after a confused start, a class change and a brief hiatus to chase a comedy festival and lose more money that I didn’t already have we arrive here. Week six, heading into the second show of my graduating level 6 class.
The first show was a little bumpy. We had some tech troubles and some scenes that relied heavily on music were left on stage with their metaphorical dicks out. Me included, it’s always a fun feeling realizing that god mic is not working or the musical button is not coming and the lights aren’t dimming. It’s just you and your partner, the audience and both your metaphorical dicks hanging in the wind.
But somewhere in the world right now, someone is having a shit show. You don’t have to like it, but there is no sense beating yourself up about it. It was the first show and we were last in the night. If we are going to fuck up a show I was glad it was this one. Plus there is nothing quite like public humiliation to leave you hungry for the next try.
The process has been extremely enjoyable and I’ve really been loving the conservatory course in the twilight levels 5 and 6. We get to class, pitch scenes, get them up, get some notes and at the end Tim gives us a loose set list for the next show. He will continue to change the set list for the next few shows, then bring together all the sketches he thought did the best. It’s an organic, open process that requires patience and intuition.
Our next show is this coming Monday and it’s 95% all new. If you are in Chicago and aren’t doing anything we are first up at 8 o’clock. $5 and you will see my ass.
